I wish I had read this book earlier. As someone from Eastern Europe working in American corporations, so many of the challenges and situations finally made sense — and the practical advice felt spot on. It’s the first book I’ve found that really speaks to our experience, and I highly recommend it.

This book is marketed towards eastern European immigrants trying to learn the hidden rules of corporate life in the United States, but even as someone born and raised in the US, I still found a lot of wisdom, strategies, and tactics that would never be taught to the average worker. It seems so much of our success in a corporate environment is based on hidden rules that we only discover in hindsight, after we have burnt our bridges. In the book, the authors give discerning insights into how to build strong support among colleagues and leadership, as well as clever tools to navigate conflicts within our teams, and even with superiors. While there are some parts that seem geared towards specifically helping eastern Europeans, the majority of the book could easily help anyone who has felt demoralized or helpless to advance in a corporate environment. Corporate culture is its own beast. If you're looking to improve your diplomacy skills and happiness at work, you won't find a more clear-cut, direct guide than this. Absolutely worth picking up. It's a very quick, easy-breezey read, and it could seriously improve your quality of life with just a few simple changes in our approach. I already feel more secure at work and much happier with my team.

Fortune Hunting in American Corporations is the first book I’ve come across that directly addresses cultural differences between Eastern European professionals and American corporate culture. While some people adapt seamlessly, others struggle and need guidance to navigate these complexities.

Although I had previously read The Culture Map, this book provided a fresh perspective on how Americans perceive Eastern Europeans and vice versa. It explores the common perception among Eastern Europeans that Americans can come across as insincere, overly smiley, and even somewhat superficial.

I particularly appreciated the book’s structure: it’s clear, to the point, and packed with practical examples without unnecessary fluff. It also offers unconventional insights into workplace performance and HR interactions, making it a valuable read for those aiming to succeed in corporate environments.

One of the most valuable takeaways for me was the distinction between having a mentor and a sponsor, highlighting the additional career benefits a sponsor can provide.

I highly recommend this book as a practical guide for anyone pursuing a corporate career, especially those navigating cultural differences in the workplace.
